Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What type of leaders will I find at the Breakthrough Leadership Conference?

A: The Breakthrough Leadership Conference is for congregation leaders--pastors, other church staff, and lay leaders. That said, the lay leaders who attend (more than 60 percent of the participants) come from a wide range of professions. Past training courses included:

Bankers, business owners, CEOs, corporate executives, CPAs, department managers, engineers, executive directors, human resource directors and other HR personnel, judicatory officials, marketing professionals, mental health professionals, real estate brokers, sales managers, seminary professors, teachers, university administrators, and more.

They tell us the principles and practices they learn at the BLC are directly applicable to their leadership at work. In fact, the professional value of the conference is so high, many leaders find their employers will provide time off work and cover their costs to attend. In addition, the BLC is a tremendous networking opportunity.

Q: Does my organization need to enroll or pay a membership fee in order to send representatives to the conference?

A: No. There is no separate enrollment fee or membership fee for your congregation or organization. To attend the conference, participants pay for a Tuition Fee and a Lodging and Meals Package.

Q: What does Stephen Ministries bring to the area of leadership?

A: Stephen Ministries is a learning laboratory for leadership--we've been teaching and practicing it for more than three decades. The Breakthrough Leadership Conference is built on:

  • Everything we've learned from equipping more than 50,000 church leaders to lead life-changing ministries
  • Years of extensive research and benchmarking of congregations and organizations as well as interviewing and surveying thousands of leaders
  • Our intensive study and application of the wisdom of leadership experts in the church and business world
  • A systematic approach to leadership gained from developing strategies and processes for our ministry systems
  • The insights our staff has gained after serving in leadership roles in a wide range of organizations before coming to Stephen Ministries
  • 30-plus years of experience leading an organization, carrying out a vision, managing staff, growing amid rapid changes in society, overcoming challenges, and seizing opportunities

All this will be packed into the rich and transformational Breakthrough Leadership Conference experience.

Q: How is this event different from other Stephen Ministries training courses?

A: Our Stephen Series and ChristCare Series training courses equip pastors, church staff, and lay leaders to set up and maintain those specific ministry systems in their congregations. The Breakthrough Leadership Conference focuses on leadership in a much broader and deeper sense. It equips leaders to lead in a wider variety of situations, such as leading an entire congregation, or leading a ministry team within a congregation.

One area in which the the Breakthrough Leadership Conference is just like our other training courses is that it maintains the same high quality, excellence, and practicality that Stephen Ministries is known for.

Q: We plan to send a number of people, but only one is ready to register right now. Can that person send in his or her registration now to get the early discount rate as well? Or do all registrations need to be sent together if we want to get the group rate?

A: Whenever possible, send registrations together. But if waiting for some registrations will make others miss a deadline, send in the ones you have ready before the deadline so they can get the early discount. Then everyone from your organization can qualify for the group rate, and those who sign up early can also enjoy the early registration discount.

If you have any questions about registering a group, call us at (314) 428-2600 and we will be happy to talk with you.

Q: I'm coming to the conference for sure--but I don't know yet how many others from my organization will be attending. What rate should I use for item 18 on the registration form?

A: Base your tuition rate on how many people from your organization you think will be attending. If that number changes between now and the conference, call us and we can make any necessary adjustments to your group tuition fee.

Q: I'm attending the BLC as a representative of my church, but my company will be paying my way. Should I list my company or my congregation on the registration form?

A: Your company and your congregation will both benefit from your attending. If registering under your congregation qualifies you for the group rate, by all means do so. On your registration form, on line 10, write the name of the organization you are representing, regardless of who is funding your attendance.

Q: When do I sign up for breakout sessions?

A: You will be able to choose your breakout sessions online before the conference or during on-site registration when you arrive at the conference. Most breakout topics will be offered more than once, and we will have ample seating in all breakout rooms to help ensure that you are able to get into the breakout sessions you want to attend.

Q: Can I receive Continuing Education Units (CEUs) for attending the BLC?

A: Yes. The BLC includes 35 hours of instruction, so certificates for 3.5 CEUs are available. To receive CEUs, mark the box in item 21 of the BLC registration form, provide a date of birth (item 7), include the $20 fee, and complete the BLC. CEUs may also be requested while you are at the BLC or any time afterward.

Your certifying agency may require a list of BLC objectives and faculty. Read information on objectives and faculty of the BLC.

Q: Can I receive academic credit for attending the BLC?

A: Yes. Concordia University Chicago is offering three semester hours of graduate credit for completing the BLC along with pre- and post-conference assignments. Dr. Haugk and Dr. Paap are the instructors of record for this course. See the information at www.breakthroughleadership.org/credit or call us at (314) 428-2600 to learn more.
