Kenneth Haugk, Ph.D., has led Stephen Ministries through three decades of growth, taking it from a fledgling startup to an organization that provides training, resources, and consultation to more than 10,000 congregations and organizations worldwide. A pastor and clinical psychologist, he has grounded his leadership in biblical theology and sound psychology. As an entrepreneur, executive director, and researcher, he also has a deep understanding of leadership from a business point of view. Dr. Haugk is a member of the Society of Consulting Psychologists and the Society of Psychologists in Management. Author of more than a dozen books on topics ranging from grief to business antagonism, he has received numerous awards for his teaching, writing, and leadership and is a frequent presenter on psychological and leadership issues at universities, seminaries, conferences, and organizations.
David Paap, Litt.D., has extensive leadership experience on many fronts. As Stephen Ministries Program Director, he leads the Pastoral Staff and Program Staff and works closely with Dr. Haugk in leading the organization. As an Army Reserve Chaplain for 25 years (retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel), he developed a family support program, supervised other chaplains, and served in the Pentagon during Desert Storm. As a parish pastor for 10 years and now as a congregation leader, he has church leadership experience on both sides of the pulpit. As a researcher on breakthrough congregations, he has surveyed, interviewed, and consulted with thousands of church leaders. Dr. Paap is an accomplished writer and teacher; audiences value his ability to turn complex concepts into memorable, do-able ideas.
Nancy Gieseler Devor, Ph.D., is Director of the Clergy and Congregation Care Program at the Samaritan Institute in Denver, headquarters for the nationwide network of Samaritan Counseling Centers. A clinical psychologist and ordained pastor, she previously served as Executive Director of the Danielson Institute at Boston University. Dr. Devor has years of experience and expertise in the areas of workplace psychology and clergy and congregation care.
Kurt Senske, J.D., Ph.D., is CEO of Lutheran Social Services, a multi-state social service agency that has more than tripled in size during his tenure. He has earned a wealth of leadership experience in several roles, and he currently serves on the Board of Directors for three organizations in the church and business arenas, including Thrivent Financial, a Fortune 500 financial services organization. He serves as Chair of the Board for Human Care Ministries of The Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod. A gifted public speaker, Dr. Senske is also the author of two books, Executive Values: A Christian Approach to Organizational Leadership and Personal Values: God's Game Plan For Life. Dr. Senske, his wife, Laurie, and their daughter, Sydney, live in Austin, Texas.
William McKay, M.Div., specializes in effective teams, leadership development, group dynamics, and healthy supervision. As Stephen Ministries Director of Project Development, Rev. McKay was the driving force behind the development of the Stephen Ministry and ChristCare Group Leader training resources. Author of three books and four courses, Rev. McKay has a warm, engaging teaching style through which he communicates essential information, leads insightful skill practices, and offers touches of humor in just the right places.
Pamela Montgomery has equipped thousands of leaders at Stephen Ministries' training events since 1993. A graduate of Haworth College of Business at Western Michigan University, she has been a leader in several professional capacities at both large and small companies and has served as both a staff person and a lay leader in a congregation. She has a keen ability to speak from the heart and connect with her audience in a powerful way.
Bruce Hartung, S.T.M., Ph.D., is dean of Ministerial Formation for Concordia Seminary in St. Louis. A pastor and clinical psychologist with extensive experience in clergy health and conflict resolution, he writes "Pressure Points," a column in The Reporter, a publication for Lutheran church workers. He previously served as executive director of the LCMS Commission on Ministerial Growth and Support.
Palmer (Pam) Reynolds is co-founder, President, and CEO of Phoenix Textile Corporation, a leading supplier of textiles, custom draperies, and interior design products and services to the healthcare industry. Founded in 1983, the company has been recognized twice by Inc. Magazine. Mrs. Reynolds has won numerous awards herself, including Entrepreneur of the Year in St. Louis. She is a member of the Board of Trustees of Missouri Baptist Medical Center, a member of the National Association of Women Business Owners, and a past member of the Executive Board for the Missouri Baptist Convention.
Stephen Glynn served as a Coast Guard officer for 13 years before becoming Director of Human Resources at Stephen Ministries in 1994. An expert on personnel issues, he co-wrote the Stephen Ministries Executive Manual with Dr. Haugk and is a frequent presenter on personnel and human resources topics. Participants will greatly benefit from his extensive research and experience in the areas of hiring; training, coaching, and supervising staff and volunteers; working with interns; and building and strengthening organizational culture.
Joel Keen, M.Div., joined Stephen Ministries in 1995 while attending seminary. He was so impressed by the way that the organization went about fulfilling its mission that he joined the pastoral staff upon graduation. He now manages Stephen Ministries' technology and video production departments, directs and teaches at training conferences and workshops, assists the HR department on recruitment issues, and consults with pastors and other leaders. He has a wealth of knowledge on how leaders can most effectively use technology.
John Avery, MA, CT, PFC, is Executive Director of Sunrise Consulting in St. Louis. A licensed funeral director, he speaks across the country about grief and bereavement. He regularly provides consultation for medical professionals, business executives, church staff, and educators on how to relate to those who are grieving.
Joel Bretscher joined the Stephen Ministries St. Louis staff in 1995 after learning about the organization while serving as a Stephen Minister in a church in Arizona. As Director of Communications, he coordinates marketing and public relations, writes and edits training materials, consults with pastors and other leaders, and teaches at workshops and training courses. Joel worked closely with Dr. Paap in developing the Breakthrough Congregations Track. Prior to coming to Stephen Ministries, he served for ten years as production manager for a leading computer graphics company in Phoenix.
Amity Haugk is one of the newer members of the program staff at Stephen Ministries. A member of the research team, she is tracking the progress of 2006 and 2007 Breakthrough Leadership Conference participants and sharing what she learns with the entire program team. Prior to joining the staff she served as a manager at Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida.
