Breakthrough Leadership Conference Graduate Credit

Concordia University Chicago is offering three graduate semester hours of credit for successful completion of the WKSM 6200 Breakthrough Leadership course requirements and full participation in the Breakthrough Leadership Conference offered by Stephen Ministries on October 12-17, 2008.

Course Objectives

The Breakthrough Leadership course will enable students to--

  • identify and build on their leadership strengths;
  • identify and develop a plan to address barriers to their own leadership effectiveness;
  • articulate a strategy to develop an organizational culture based on breakthrough leadership principles; and
  • apply practical, breakthrough leadership skills in organizational settings.

Course Design

The course consists of five days of on-site training in St. Louis, Missouri, including lectures and discussion led by Stephen Ministries and guest faculty, breakout sessions, skill practice, and audio-visual presentations. The course also includes pre-conference reading reports and a post-conference writing project.

Course Requirements

This course is limited to participants who hold a baccalaureate degree from an accredited institution and who attend the entire Breakthrough Leadership Conference on October 12-17, 2008.

To qualify, participants must complete the following:

  1. Register for the Breakthrough Leadership Conference with Stephen Ministries, St. Louis. Indicate that you intend to register for graduate course credit with Concordia University Chicago.
  2. Register for graduate course credit through Concordia University Chicago by September 15, 2008. (Download a course registration form.) If you have any questions concerning completing the registration form, please contact Dr. Carol Reiseck at Carol.Reiseck@cuchicago.edu or by phone at (708) 209-3262. In order to receive graduate credit, you must pay tuition and register for the WKSM 6200 Breakthrough Leadership course with Concordia University Chicago in addition to registering with Stephen Ministries and paying the Tuition and Lodging Fees for the conference.
  3. When you are registered for both the conference and the course, you will be placed on the list of graduate students attending the conference.
  4. Complete pre-conference reading assignments and reports and bring them to the conference.
  5. Attend and participate fully in all aspects of the Breakthrough Leadership Conference.
  6. During the conference, attend a special meeting with Stephen Ministries' faculty members to discuss procedures for completing course requirements.
  7. Receive faculty approval for a post-conference writing project.
  8. Complete the post-conference writing project and submit it on or before the due date.
  9. Receive a passing grade.

Course Assignments

Those registered for graduate course credit are required to read selected books from the list below and complete a reading report for each book they read. Download the format for reading reports.

Pre-Conference Reading List

All readings and reports should be completed before attending the Breakthrough Leadership Conference whenever possible.

Post-Conference Writing Projects

The post-conference writing assignments require each graduate student to reflect on his or her experiences as a leader, examine and challenge a current area of leadership, and apply the principles and practices learned at the Breakthrough Leadership Conference. Topics must be approved ahead of time by Stephen Ministries' faculty.

Writing projects must be postmarked no later than January 15, 2009. After this date, students who need additional time must apply to Stephen Ministries' faculty for a three-month extension (postmarked no later than April 15, 2009) and submit a late paper fee of $100.

Papers are not returned to students. Students must make a copy of the project for their own files before sending it in.
