Volunteer Positions
for Retired Couples

Stephen Ministries St. Louis has volunteer opportunities for couples who love serving God through Stephen Ministry and want to do even more. We're currently welcoming gifted and committed married couples to be part of our Conference Team. The following questions are answered by current conference team members.

What is a Conference Team Member?

"We work in the background at training courses so the conference runs as smoothly as it can. We come into a hotel with big empty rooms. We transform them into an office, a resource center, and a meeting room where 400-500 people have a profound experience of Christian community and growth."

Jeri Simpkins
Houston, TX

"We are the face of Stephen Ministries. We interact with the participants in the office and resource center."

Ellie VanDyke
Holland, MI

Did you say couples?

"I like serving as couples. It's something my husband and I can do together. It has been one of the biggest blessings for us to do this. We have never had the opportunity to work together and it really has been fun."

Jane Gorbett
Columbus, IN

Do we have to be retired?

"No, you don't have to be retired, but you do have to have flexibility with your work schedule to be gone ten days, three to four times a year. Since my husband and I are retired, we have more time available to volunteer."

Linda Gressel
Sanford, NC

How hard is the work involved?

"Amazingly, the work has gotten easier because we are more confident in what we are doing. It doesn't seem as taxing now. Physical labor is involved in setup and packup, but the rest of the conference isn't too bad. You need to be on your feet and going a lot. You sit down every opportunity you get. You need to have a certain amount of physical ability and stamina."

Jane Gorbett
Columbus, IN

"Some of it can be quite challenging. Ninety percent is not that difficult."

Del VanDyke
Holland, MI

How are Conference Team Members chosen?

"I was surprised at the intensity of the interview process; it was a lot like being hired for a job. Now I understand why they exercise so much care in choosing volunteers, and I admire the excellence and strength of the culture behind the process."

Linda Gressel
Sanford, NC

"I have laughingly said that the applications we filled out are more extensive than for a paying job. The tryout is very beneficial."

Jane Gorbett
Columbus, IN

What kind of commitment is required?

Stephen Glynn, Director of Human Resources says, "If it looks as though you and your spouse might be good candidates, we'll ask you to commit to a period of training and tryout. If that goes well, we'll follow the training agreement with a one-year covenant for service, which can be renewed annually--we hope to work with Conference Team Members for many years.

"If we have any doubts at all, we will stop the process right away to minimize your time investment and reduce possible disappointment.

"In addition to your initial training and serving at three or more courses each year, we also plan regular training and refresher classes held at the Stephen Ministries Center in St. Louis, Missouri. Read What Does It Mean to Be a Member of the Conference Team? to learn more."

How do I sign up?

"Fill out two copies of the application (one for you and one for your spouse), include a résumé and cover letter, and mail them in. If you'd like to know more about being a volunteer for Stephen Ministries read, What Does It Mean to Be a Member of the Conference Team?

"Please do not hesitate to call Stephen Ministries at (314) 428-2600 and ask for me or my assistant, Becky Bogar, if you have more questions."
