Stephen Ministries developed the ChristCare Small Group Ministry system between 1993 and 1996 with a pilot phase involving more than 200 congregations. Today, more than 900 congregations from more than 50 denominations are involved with ChristCare Small Group Ministry.
More than 3,000 pastors, church staff, and lay leaders have been trained as Equippers (those who implement and direct ChristCare Group Ministry in the congregation). These Equippers have trained more than 20,000 ChristCare Group Leaders. Tens of thousands of people have grown in community and discipleship as members of ChristCare Groups.
Download the ChristCare Group Ministry Media Fact Sheet (in Adobe Acrobat PDF format). It contains a brief history of the ChristCare Series, a description of how the system works, definitions of the basic terms, current ChristCare Group Ministry statistics, and a map that shows the number of ChristCare Group Ministry congregations in each state.
Congregations enroll in Stephen Ministries' ChristCare Small Group Ministry system. This provides access to the training, resources, experience, and ongoing support from Stephen Ministries St. Louis. There is a one-time enrollment fee.
The pastors and lay leaders who will direct a congregation's ChristCare Small Group Ministry attend a one-week ChristCare Series Equipper's Training Course where the faculty of Stephen Ministries St. Louis trains them to serve as ChristCare Equippers.
Equippers recruit, select, and train lay people in the congregation to serve as ChristCare Group Leaders.
Equippers and ChristCare Group Leaders work together to form ChristCare Small Groups.
After beginning to lead ChristCare Groups, ChristCare Group Leaders meet with Equippers twice a month for SEA Groups (Support, Encouragement, and Accountability: a model for small group peer supervision) and continuing education.
When a ChristCare Group grows to more than 10 members, it births into two groups, expanding Christian community, mutual ministry, and outreach.
Enrolled congregations repeat steps two through six as needed, helping their ChristCare Group Ministry grow in size and impact on the congregation.
