Beginnings: A ChristCare
Group Experience

Beginnings is a special small group curriculum (available only to enrolled ChristCare congregations) that lays the groundwork for a life-transforming small group experience. It introduces group members to the four ChristCare Group activities--

  • community building and care
  • Biblical Equipping
  • prayer and worship
  • missional service

Group members grow spiritually while they gain the caring relational skills they need to form a close, trusting Christian community. This foundation prepares group members for future growth and spurs them on to service.

The Beginnings experience includes the following eight sessions:

Session 1--Circles of Care with Christ at the Center

Group members get acquainted with one another and discuss a group covenant. Biblical Equipping looks at what it means to be in a Christian small group.

Session 2--Listening as an Act of Love

Group members learn important skills for effective listening, and Biblical Equipping focuses on what the Bible says about listening. During this session the group also finalizes its covenant.

Session 3--ChristCare Groups Care

Using the tools of Biblical Equipping, personal sharing, and prayer, group members learn about Christian caring and discuss concrete ways to care for one another and those outside the group.

Session 4--Process-Oriented Caring

Through role play and discussion, group members learn how to relate to one another in a process-oriented way. Biblical Equipping guides members in discovering Jesus' style of relating.

Session 5--Responding to Love with Love

Group members read several Bible passages on love and caring and discuss how to apply them to their own lives. Personal sharing and a time for prayer provide opportunities for group members to care and develop a deeper trust within the group.

Session 6--Communicating Assertively

The preclass reading in the Beginnings Group Member Guide and the Biblical Equipping session provide insights about what it means to be an assertive Christian. Group members put what they've learned into practice through a group exercise in affirmation.

Session 7--Enjoying the Gift of God's Word

This session ties together all eight steps of Biblical Equipping and introduces the group to the practice of Biblical Equipping Apart.

Session 8--Staying Connected

Through Biblical Equipping, group members take a closer look at what Jesus teaches about growing as a Christian. Group members also discuss another ChristCare group activity--missional service. They spend time evaluating and looking ahead to what the group will do next.

Beginnings helps ChristCare Groups get off to a strong start and sets them up for future growth and success. ChristCare Groups will sometimes go through Beginnings again--to start up new groups after a group has birthed, to get new members on board, or periodically to refocus the group more strongly on the four ChristCare group activities.

Beginnings is available to enrolled ChristCare congregations only. If you would like to get a taste of ChristCare, consider trying Spiritual Growth through Spiritual Gifts.
