Brianna Moore, and Ron Keefer, volunteers with First Presbyterian Church in Coeur d'Alene, serve breakfast for Project Home Calling Cards, an effort to raise money to purchase calling cards for Idaho troops.
COEUR d'ALENE--Calling collect just doesn't cut it for members of First Presbyterian Church.
Long distance charges don't apply either.
But what does work for church members are phone cards, and they want to purchase them for Idaho troops serving overseas.
"Our goal is to get a calling card for every service person from the state of Idaho," said Buzz Hays, church volunteer.
One of Presbyterian's ChristCare groups has organized three breakfasts in an effort to collect money for the calling cards. "Project Home Calling Cards" raised about $1,100 in its first breakfast two weeks ago.
"We've had a tremendous response," Hays said.
Donna Schwandt, a volunteer who helped scramble about 20 dozen eggs, said she wanted to participate in such a worthy cause.
"If we can get them phone cards it's one way to help," Schwandt said. "This is such a great thing to do."
Schwandt said she's surprised how supportive church members have been in the effort to provide a couple of free phone calls over the holidays.
"Everyone has been so generous," she said. "It feels really good to do something that helps our troops."
Although the majority of the hungry crowd were members of the church, officials opened the door to the community.
Mike and Barbara Brock, Hayden, said they wanted to support the troops any way the could, and if that meant eating fried potatoes and eggs then they were all for it.
"I can't think of a better way to support them," Mike said. "Those people are over there fighting on our behalf."
Ron Keefer, a member of Christ Care Group, was the biscuits and gravy guy on Sunday. He said it's nice to see the church come together for Idaho Troops.
"It doesn't hurt to take a little extra time to do what we can," Keefer said. "Our troops need all the support they can get."
The church is working with the Idaho National Guard and phone companies for the best rates and the assurance that the cards will make it to the troops.
"The people from Coeur d'Alene and our church have been very supportive," Keefer said. "This is more than any breakfast is worth."
First Presbyterian Church will hold its third "Project Home Calling Cards" breakfast Dec. 5.
