Living in St. Louis

Large City with a
Small-Town Feel

Many at the Stephen Ministries Center have come to St. Louis from other parts of the country, and they've found it easy to set down roots here.

"I'm originally from Indiana, my wife is from Nebraska, and we lived in the Phoenix area for ten years. While we liked a number of things about Arizona, it never really felt like home," says Joel Bretscher. "When we moved to St. Louis, almost immediately it felt like home!"

Many Stephen Ministries employees have found that St. Louis blends the advantages of small-town life and big-city diversity. "What I like about St. Louis is that it has all the opportunities and amenities of a large city but not the pace," says Amanda Barbeau. "Plus, it isn't the kind of city where everything is concrete--we have many parks and nature trails and several historic districts. We even have old farmer's markets where you can still haggle for a good price on summer squash!"

A Great Place to Raise a Family

Staff at Stephen Ministries have also found that St. Louis is great for families.

Rachel Remington lived in St. Louis as a child and now lives here with her husband and young daughter. She says, "With its affordable homes, big-city amenities, and small-town feel, St. Louis is a great place to raise a family. Many of the attractions are free or low cost, like the zoo, Grant's Farm, Forest Park, and of course the Arch. Plus, with the Cardinals, the Rams, and the Blues, it's a great sports city."

Anna Barrett, who grew up in St. Louis, says, "St. Louis is such a family-friendly town since most of its greatest attractions are free! We have a wonderful zoo, art museum, and history museum, just to name a few. And all these attractions are a short distance away--even if you don't live in the immediate area, it's so quick and easy to get to them. I absolutely love St. Louis!"

Things to Do in St. Louis

One thing staff really appreciate about St. Louis is the wide variety of attractions it offers--and how easy it is to get to them.

Bill McKay grew up near Los Angeles, but now he calls St. Louis home. "The St. Louis area has all the amenities of a major city but with a very manageable size," Bill says. "Within 20 minutes I can drive from my home to the symphony, the opera, and the Repertory Theater; to Forest Park with its world-class zoo, art museum, and outdoor musical theater; to Cardinals, Blues, and Rams games; to six universities and four seminaries; to some of the best research hospitals in the United States; and to a wide variety of restaurants and other entertainment opportunities. St. Louis has it all, and it is all very accessible."
