Large City with a Many at the Stephen Ministries Center have come to St. Louis from other parts of the country, and they've found it quite easy to set down roots here.
"I'm originally from Indiana, my wife is from Nebraska, and we lived in the Phoenix area for ten years. While we liked a number of things about Arizona, it never really felt like home," says Joel Bretscher. "When we moved to St. Louis, almost immediately it felt like home!"
Many Stephen Ministries employees have found that St. Louis blends the advantages of small-town life and big-city diversity. "I love St. Louis because it has the friendly atmosphere of a small town but the diversity, culture, and charm of a large city," says St. Louis native Betsy Lehn. "One of my favorite places in town is Forest Park. Not only is it a beautiful location for picnicking or taking one of the many biking and walking trails, but it's also home to a variety of free attractions, including a fantastic zoo and several great museums."
Karen Cole, who has three school-age children, works part-time at Stephen Ministries so she can be home when her children leave for school and when they get home. "Having the chance to live and work in a city like St. Louis is truly fantastic. It's been the perfect place for me to raise my family with its friendly, small-town environment and countless activities. And of course, with the Cardinals, St. Louis is a top-notch baseball town--in fact, it's one of the best places for sports in general!"
Pastoral staff member Rev. Kevin Scott said, "Being a parent of three young children, I've found St. Louis to be a great place to live and raise a family. We often take our kids to one of the many free or low-cost children's activities around the area, like the St. Louis Zoo, the Science Center, and the City Museum. And they love going to Busch Stadium to cheer for the Cardinals!"

Sandy Ashby has lived in the St. Louis area all her life and has worked at Stephen Ministries for more than ten years. "St. Louis has such a warm, friendly neighborhood environment," says Sandy. "I love going for long walks in my neighborhood, and I often meet up with friends. The city has a real sense of historical heritage, but it's also very up-to-date. And there are so many things to do here--the Botanical Garden is my personal favorite! Even my kids look forward to working and living in St. Louis--it's just such a wonderful place to live!"
Bill McKay grew up near Los Angeles, but now he calls St. Louis home. "The St. Louis area has all the amenities of a major city but with a very manageable size. Within 20 minutes I can drive from my home to the symphony, the opera, and the Repertory Theater; to Forest Park with its world-class zoo, art museum, and outdoor musical theater; to Cardinals, Blues, and Rams games; to six universities and four seminaries; to some of the best research hospitals in the United States; and to a wide variety of restaurants and other entertainment opportunities. St. Louis has it all, and it is all very accessible."
